Course Descriptions

The course of English Phonology is designed to give information of the general theory about speech sounds, the principles regulating the use of sounds, and how they are used in spoken English. It is also intended to give some materials and exercises to overcome the common obstruction (because of different characteristics of the mother tongue and the target language, and fossilizations) faced by non-native speakers of English as a Foreign Language Learners when they are producing spoken English.

Learning Outcomes

Students are able to:

  1. Recognize and describe the specific linguistic terms found in phonetics and phonology
  2. Describe the organs of speech and their mechanism to produce the speech sounds
  3. Clarify the distinctive features of the speech sounds
  4. Describe the role of phonology in language learning.

The goal of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of phonology and of the sound system of English by means of a combination of lectures discussing the issues and practical group exercises, where there will be an opportunity to practise the principles discussed in lectures. This class will be aimed at students with little or no background in phonology.
