Course Descriptions

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of sociolinguistics. It introduces the students to the key concepts of Language and Society, Language, Dialects, and Varieties, Choosing a Code, Speech Communities, Language Change, Language and Culture, Ethnography, Language and Sex, Solidarity and Politeness, Acting and Conversing, Style of Speech, Language Planning, Sociolinguistics and Language Teaching, the discipline. It aims to illustrate how linguistic and social variables interaction speech communities. This course is a combination of reading about sociolinguistics and doing sociolinguistics. Students will be asked to collect linguistic data from real speech, and learn how to interpret and analyze it.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, the students are expected to be able to;
